Michigan Senate Approves Bill Honoring Benton Township’s Kevin White on Stretch of I-94

Beloved former Benton Township Supervisor Kevin White’s name would live on through recognition along Interstate-94 through legislation approved by the Michigan State Senate today.

State Senator Kim LaSata tells us that the State Senate today approved a bill sponsored by her that would designate a portion of I-94 in Benton Township as the Kevin D. White Memorial Highway.

White, who was also serving as the popular Benton Township Supervisor at the time, was a state Department of Transportation worker who died from injuries sustained while on the job in Berrien County. The memorial section would begin at the interchange of I-94 and I-196 and extend south to the Napier Avenue exit.

LaSata says, “I thank my colleagues for approving this bill once again honoring Kevin White’s memory and I am hopeful it will become law this year,” while adding, “Kevin put service over self, dedicating his work to helping improve Southwest Michigan communities despite the inherent dangerous risks involved with the job.

The Bainbridge Township Legislator continued, “His tragic loss is another sobering reminder of our responsibilities as drivers, to focus while behind the wheel and limit distracted driving — especially in work zones.”

White was assigned to MDOT’s facility at the Coloma garage. He tragically died in October of 2019 from injuries suffered when a tire from a passing truck struck him while he was clearing debris from the shoulder of I-94. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Senate Bill 48, which is a reintroduction of similar legislation from last session that did not become law, now advances to the state House for further consideration.
