A brazen mother and son duo apparently engaged in criss-crossing the Midwest stealing cash and property from members of fitness clubs and YMCA organizations in at least three states has been jailed on multiple counts of theft and fraud for their crime spree.

Last Wednesday, March 16th, the Niles Police Department credits alert staff members of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA in helping to put an end to the run of crimes that took the two across Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, if not other states as well. Apprehended by Niles authorities were 40-year old Abeni Brown and her 18-year old son, Aaron.

They were nabbed for stealing personal property from member lockers at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA despite the locks on those lockers. Through an investigation in late February, Niles Detectives developed the mother as a suspect and learned that she had been stealing member's personal property in several area YMCA facilities and fitness centers in the three state area.

It was when she struck the Niles-Buchanan Y that she enlisted her son, Aaron to help out. Detective Lieutenant Chad Mitchell estimates that the woman "has stolen and/or fraudulently obtained money and merchandise" valued in excess of $20,000 in the last several months.
