Old Utility Bill Scam Roars to Life Again in SW Michigan

If there is one thing that crooks are notorious for it’s their diligence. They are bound and determined to get your money one way or another, and once again they are hitting ordinary consumers by scamming them regarding their electric bill.

Indiana Michigan Power is warning customers of new reports that an ongoing scam is targeting utility customers with a new vengeance.

Scam artists posing as I&M personnel have threatened to disconnect service unless an immediate payment is made. In some cases, scam artists have been able to falsely mask their phone number as if it were indeed I&M’s customer service phone number (1-800-311-4634).

Customers are told they are behind on their electric bill and are facing immediate disconnection. In some of the scams, they are instructed to purchase a debit card, load the card with money, and then call an 800 number and provide the number from the card.

This is a scam targeting utility customers that has been reported frequently across the nation in recent years.

I&M customers who receive such calls should hang up immediately and contact their local police department and then I&M’s Customer Operations Center at 800-311-4634 to report the scam.

In reality, any I&M customer whose bill is past due will receive a written notice of a possible disconnection and how to prevent it.

Customers should be aware that legitimate I&M employees will never do any of the following:

  • Disconnect service without prior written warning.
  • Accept payments in person or call and ask for credit/debit card information over the phone.
  • Insist a payment be made with a prepaid credit card.
  • Ask a customer to meet us in a parking lot or other location to make a payment.
