U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today congratulated Fiona Doyle, a senior at Portage Central High School, as the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition (CAC) for Michigan’s Sixth District. Her art, composed of watercolor, is titled Cascada Gozalandia, and will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
“Fiona’s beautiful artwork captured both how wonderful nature is as well as her extraordinary talent,” Upton said. “Her piece will be displayed alongside all the other winners from across the country. Congratulations, Fiona! Thank you to every young artist who submitted their piece and thank you to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for making this possible.”
“It is an honor to be featured in the Capitol as an artist,” Fiona said. “I decided to paint my piece as the opposite side of a waterfall. I hope my watercolor inspires politicians to think from a different perspective.”
Rep. Upton’s office once again partnered with the Kalamazoo Institute of Art for the competition. The CAC in the Sixth District was held in conjunction with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts High School Area Show.
Initiated by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, the CAC is a nationwide annual art competition that allows high school students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories to showcase their artistic ability.
