Present Pillars in Benton Harbor is seeking a state grant to establish a community-led violence intervention initiative.
The Benton Township Board of Trustees this week approved a letter of support for the organization’s plan as it applies for the $500,000 community violence intervention grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Present Pillars Director James Gunter tells us the department announced the grant opportunity last month, identifying the area as one of its priorities.
“The 49022 was one of four communities chosen by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for this program,” Gunter said.
The letter from trustees says Present Pillars is seeking to create a community violence intervention ecosystem that will include public safety, schools, youth groups, healthcare providers, and faith-based partners. Gunter says it will take a coalition.
“Present Pillars will be receiving it and working with a coalition of other organizations and individuals to complete the project.”
Gunter said the ultimate goal is to stamp out gun violence.
The board Tuesday approved a resolution stating its official support for the Present Pillars application. Gunter says the group has also received support from the city of Benton Harbor.
The state has made $1.8 million in community violence intervention grants available over a two-year period with a focus on Benton Harbor/Benton Township, Flint, Lansing, Saginaw, and Detroit.
