SJ Library Reverts Reverts to Curbside Service January 10 Due to COVID Surge

The Omicron COVID surge is taking its toll at Maud Preston Palenske Library in downtown St. Joseph.  The Libary says it’s reverting to curbside service January 10.

With rapidly increasing Covid positivity rates in Saint Joseph and the surrounding areas, the library has made the difficult decision to close the building to in-person access and return to curbside-only service.  We appreciate your patience as we work to help mitigate the spread of COVID to help keep our community and staff safe.

Curbside-Only Service Begins January 10

They are making every effort to keep as many services available as possible. The following services will be available:

Computer Access:  Patrons can still utilize the library computers, wifi, and printers by making an appointment.

Books and Materials:  Below are instructions for how to use curbside service.

Fax, Scanner, and Copier:  Staff will assist you at curbside

Newspaper Access:   Make an appointment for an hour to come in and read the papers.

Reference Questions:   Staff will be available by phone or email during business hours to answer questions.

Reader’s Advisory:   Not sure what to request?  Let our friendly staff help.   Request a genre book bundle curated by different staff members, or check out a storytime bag from the children’s department.  There is also the fantastic help at Novelist Plus.   Find a read-alike for a favorite author.

Our Digital Resources are always available 24/7.    Or stock up on materials.  Did you know that the checkout period is now 3 weeks long?
Be sure to ask for a take home craft when you are driving by.  Take home Crafts  are available for all ages:   Make an adorable snowy owl,  or in the children’s department you can make a pipe cleaner snowflake or a construction paper cup of hot chocolate.

Curbside Service begins January 10th

Here’s how it works:

1.    Place your requests for titles.   You can do that online through the library catalog,  or by calling the library Mon-Fri at (269) 983-7167.   There is a limit of 10 items per card.

Here is a help page for placing holds online.

2.   You will be notified that the items are available, either an email, text, or phone call, depending on your notification settings.

3.   Please come to the library within 1 week to pick up the items during our pickup times. No calling when you arrive or appointment is necessary. Staff are watching the door for cars and listening for the bell.  We ask that you please do not come to the library until you have been notified that they are available.

4.   Our pick up times are:   Monday – Friday — 10am-6pm,   Saturday  10am-5pm
5.  The pickup area is on the east alley side of the building.

If driving, please approach from the south (off Pearl Street, Near Krasl Art Center) and proceed north.  Stop when you are next to the alley door.  Staff will be watching for cars.

If walking, come to the alley door near the outdoor book drop.  Rind the doorbell for service.
