You might not hear it every day on the street, and in fact you might run counter to the survey results at your own place of business from time to time, but when it comes to dealing with rules and regulations, small business owners in Michigan rank the state in the top five nationwide for friendliness.

Thumbtack, the website and app that finds local professionals for any project for its clients, announced this week the results of its 2018 Small Business Friendliness Survey, ranking all 50 states and 57 cities based on factors including licensing requirements, tax regulations, and labor and hiring regulations. With more than 7,500 small business owners surveyed, it’s the largest continuous study of small business perceptions of local government policy in the United States.

Small business owners gave Michigan an A+ this year, ranking fourth in the Thumbtack survey of business friendliness in all 50 states. That’s 34 spots better than last year, when it ranked 38th and received a C. As a comparison, Michigan scored higher than Ohio (B-grade) and Wisconsin (C-grade).

Based on the evaluations of their professionals, Thumbtack also assigned eight policy-specific grades to evaluate how easy local governments make it to start, operate, and grow a small business. For more details about the report and the full set of results for Michigan, click the link below:
