South Haven to be Celebrated for Community Inclusion

Residents and officials of the community of South Haven will have a new measure of civic pride this week when the Disability Network of Southwest Michigan will award the city with the Community Inclusion Award at the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 30th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, July 24th. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disability Network’s celebration will be held as a virtual, online celebration.

The Community Inclusion Award is being awarded to the city for their dedication to being inclusive to people with disabilities and for training their staff to understand disability inclusion. The city has engaged Disability Network to perform all-staff trainings on Servicing Customers with a Disability and Ableism 101. They have also contracted with Disability Network’s ADA Coordinators for an accessibility audit of the downtown area.

Miranda Grunwell, Community Education Coordinator for Disability Network, says, “It’s not often that you see a municipality dedicate the resources that South Haven has to ensuring their community is inclusive to people with disabilities. We’d like to see other cities and towns follow their example.”
