Stage Set for SJ Mayor, Commission Pay Hikes

compensation

The compensation rate for St. Joseph’s Mayor and City Commission members is reviewed, by law, every two years…and this is the year for that review. A committee called the Municipal Officers Compensation Commission, Chaired by former City Commissioner Chad Mandarino, met last week for that biennial task and has come away with a recommendation for a 3-percent increase across the board for the next two years.

The St. Joseph City Commission will receive their report tonight, but unless they reject the commission’s recommendation it will go into effect. If they take no action at all, the recommendation will automatically become the set compensation after 30 days. If they move to accept the recommendation, the commission’s compensation increase will take place on January 1st of 2020. If they vote to reject the plan, their compensation will remain unchanged for the next two years.

The Municipal Officers Compensation Commission, comprised of Chairman Mandarino, Vice Chair Donna Dumke and members Phillip Stockton and Lorraine Thomas, with one unfilled vacancy on board, voted 3 to 1 to recommend the following compensation rates:

  • Mayor’s position increases from current $5,100 to $5,253 per year
  • Mayor Pro Tem’s position increases from current $3,050 to $3,141.50 per year
  • City Commissioner’s positions increase from current $2,550 to $2,626.50 per year

The 3-percent increase would go into effect in 2020, and the rate would remain the same in 2021 if enacted as a result of tonight’s meeting.
