Another chance for you to clear out your medicine chest in a safe way is coming to the region of Michigan’s Great Southwest tomorrow thanks to Michigan State Police participation in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 24th. The Niles, Paw Paw, Wayland, and Marshall State Police Posts will all be participating in the event scheduled to take place between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm Saturday.

Residents can drop off unwanted prescription medication in each of the post’s Drug Take Back box located in their lobbies. Those who plan to participate are asked to empty all pills and tablets into a zip lock bag and remove all labels before recycling pill bottles. Liquids and “sharps” will not be accepted.

It’s important to note that this service is available year-round Monday-Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, however tomorrow’s event is a collaborative effort with the DEA.

State authorities tell us that 10 million people misused painkillers in 2019, which doesn’t include prescription stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers or other drugs that were also misused.

In the past 10 years, the DEA has collected more than 6,800 tons of prescription drugs on Take Back Day. Their goal is to save lives by removing unused prescription drugs from homes before they are misused or accidentally taken by the community’s most vulnerable citizens.
