Children are tiny, adventurous explorers, soaking up knowledge and information with every new experience. Sarett Nature Center, on Benton Center Road in Benton Harbor, provides an outdoor learning space for the community, offering environmental education, and plenty of fun, every day.

On Saturday, January 21st, Sarett will introduce their very first Story Time & Nature Hike from 6:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m, featuring ‘A North Country Night’ by Daniel San Souci. “This is an opportunity to have families with kids of all ages enjoy how different nature is after dark,” says Juliet Golob, Education Coordinator and Senior Naturalist at the nature center. “The story takes readers on a walk through moonlit woods to see what all the woodland animals are up to at night!”

‘A North Country Night’ provides an “early look at natural science”, and instills an appreciation for the fantastic creatures you will find in the wild. Attendees will hear the story, and then be led by a naturalist on a guided walk through the silent forest. (Bring a flashlight!)

“Our goal with this event is to give families an opportunity to bring their kids outside at night,” says Juliet. “It gets dark sooner now, so it’s the perfect time to come out after hours and still be home before bedtime.”

This winter has been a strange one, so the usual snowshoeing and skiing activities Sarett schedules during the colder months have not been able to take place. Programs like the Owl Prowl and do-it-yourself storybook hikes are geared toward a bit older of an audience, so this event welcomes the little ones. “There is something so incredibly rewarding about showing children the joys of nature for the first time,” Juliet says.

This event is free for current Sarett Nature Center members, and only $3 per nonmember. Usually, the grounds close at 5 p.m, so take advantage of this chance to take a peek at the lovely landscape at night. Sarett Nature Center is a non-profit organization on over 1,000 acres of beautiful scenery, with eight miles of hiking area. Get outdoors and learn a little!
