Everybody is reportedly safe following a structure fire downtown St. Joseph, according to authorities.

First responders were dispatched to 415 Main Street on Monday afternoon after reports of a couch fire in an upstairs apartment. Director of Public Safety Steve Neubecker said the building was occupied at the time of the fire, but everybody got out safely.

When crews arrived, the fire had spread from the couch to the west wall of the apartment, according to Neubecker. He added firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one room, but there is extensive water damage because of the efforts.

The building is located just South of City Hall, across a parking lot.   In addition to upstairs apartments, several commercial businesses – including Full Moon Advertising, Bertuca Bonding & Insurance, Jyothi Realty and Psychiatric Specialties – are located on the lower level of the building.

Neubecker said response time was quick, and the mutual aid was provided by the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, Benton Charter Township Fire Department and Lincoln Township Fire Department.
