The Herald-Palladium Moving to Mail Delivery and Six Day Service

Industry changes and economies of scale are changing the way in which subscribers to The Herald-Palladium newspaper will get their news and information as corporate officials are shifting to the U.S. Postal Service for delivery, and truncating weekend service to a single edition on Saturdays, with no more Sunday paper starting at the end of the month.

In a front page explanation to readers this morning, Publisher David Holgate says, “Change must take place.” He explains, “Due to changes in our industry, we can no longer react the same today as we would have even 10 years ago, and with that in mind, we are changing the way you receive your printed copy of The Herald-Palladium.”

Holgate says that starting Monday, September 30th, the distribution of the The Herald-Palladium will shift over to same-day delivery by way of the United States Postal Services. He notes, “Publishing days will be Mondays through Fridays, along with a comprehensive weekend edition published and distributed on Saturdays.”

Further explaining the decision, Holgate tells readers,”The partnership with the USPS for same-day distribution offers a more reliable distribution. It also means that our customers will get a jump on making their preparations for shopping and activities, as the Sunday edition will become a weekend edition that will be delivered with the Saturday mail.”

Holgate blames both the recruit and retention of newspaper carriers in part, saying that it has been increasingly difficult.

Apparently some of the newspaper’s carriers have already stopped delivering, and those neighborhoods that have been affected have already seen the shift to mail delivery, and some others may join before the official move over on September 30th.

Holgate reminds that the paper’s website provides early morning access online to all subscribers my 6am Monday through Saturday.

Because there is no mail delivery on official postal holidays, the paper will not be published on those days which include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Inasmuch as there is no Sunday mail delivery, the newspaper will convert to a weekend edition delivered with Saturday’s mail.
