The Mason Jar Goes Sweet On Us

The hottest spot in the eclectic Benton Harbor Arts District is about to give birth to what could very well become the coolest spot in the District…and they are barely a block away from one another. The most important part of the equation is that both enterprises are the brainchild of one of the hardest working couples in the hospitality industry in Michigan's Great Southwest.

As if Jayme Cousins and Abel Martinez weren't already cranking the foodie scene in the District to the highest levels possible at their Mason Jar Cafe, they are about to introduce you and me to their new venture, The Sweet Bar by Mason Jar at 138 Water Street, one block removed from their wildly successful farm to table diner.

Jayme tells me that they have taken over the Waterstreet Gelato Works and will re-brand as The Sweet Bar by Mason Jar while adding a number of new elements to the line of first quality gelatos that have become a staple of dessert-seekers in the Arts District.

In addition to multiple gelato flavors, the entrepreneurial couple will tee up gelato shakes, frappuccinos, cold-brew coffee on draft with nitro and a nice selection of desserts. She says they will "feel things out to see what else" they should carry in the historic portion of the Hinkley Building alongside the Water Street Glassworks.

Also on the menu will be root beer floats, coffee floats, and other sweet treats to cap off your stroll through the galleries, eateries, and breweries in and around the Arts District.

Cousins and Martinez opened their red hot Mason Jar Cafe a couple of years ago to rave reviews from the get-go once people learned that they offer amazing fresh, local and handmade food with a menu that changes seasonally to take advantage of those things that are fresh in the fields and orchards of Michigan's Great Southwest.

Not only do they source things like local asparagus, potatoes, strawberries, kale, arugula and blueberries from area farmers, they also get their soda, hot chocolate, cheese, hot sauce, chicken and eggs all locally. The popularity of their open kitchen, handmade tables, and over-the-top-friendly staff has scored them major league points with eager diners and foodies alike since day one.

The Mason Jar at 210 Water Street is on the same side of the street, about a block away from the new Sweet Bar by Mason Jar which will take a bow this week with the Summer Solstice Art Hop this Friday, June 17th, sponsored by the New Territory Arts Association as they kick off the summer season.

Stay tuned for more as the new Sweet Bar by Mason Jar comes online in downtown Benton Harbor.
