US Postal Service Will Close Wednesday in Honor of President Bush

The United States Postal Service will be honoring the memory of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush this week on Wednesday’s National Day of Mourning, and as a result the Post Office will be closed.

President Donald J. Trump has proclaimed Wednesday, December 5th, 2018, as a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of former President George H.W. Bush.

The United States Postmaster has reported that, “Out of respect for the 41st President of the United States and to honor his vast contributions to our country during his lifetime, and consistent with the Presidential Proclamation, the United States Postal Service will suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity on December 5th.”

The message today from the Postal Service adds, “We will provide limited package delivery service on that day to ensure that our network remains fluid and we do not experience any impacts to our package delivery operations that might negatively affect our customers or business partners during the remainder of our busy holiday season.”

So, if you had planned to use Wednesday as a take the Christmas packages to the Post Office day, you’ll want to plan accordingly and either move your action day up to tomorrow, or hold off until Thursday in order to avoid disappointment and disruption of your plans. You will not be getting mail delivered to your home or place of business as a result of the closure, either.

In a similar announcement, National Newspaper Association President Andrew Johnson has alerted his organization’s members that there will be no mail delivery on Wednesday as the USPS observes a national day of mourning for former President George H.W. Bush. He suggests, “Publishers should check with their business mail entry units to find out how mid-week newspaper mail will be accepted.”
