The team at Vail Rubber Works in St. Joseph is a prime example that you are never too old to reinvent yourself and grow. The 127 year old family-owned manufacturer based in St. Joe has revealed this morning plans to build a new 58,000 square foot production facility in Royalton Township on 30-acres that they have owned for a number of years.

The long-running and highly successful manufacturing firm has contracted Pearson Construction Company of Benton Harbor to build the new facility with engineering, architectural and development assistance from Abonmarche of Benton Harbor.

The sizable new facility will anchor the property just off of the southwest corner of Hollywood and Glenlord, kitty-corner from Edgewater Bank and Roger’s Foodland.

Bill Hanley is President & CEO of Vail Rubber Works. He says, “This investment underscores the company’s commitment to the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor community and our determination to maintain our position as an industry leader.”

Vail was founded in 1892 and quickly established itself as a leader in the production of roll covers for the steel and aluminum industries and others.

Construction is expected to begin this spring with a completion date in early 2020. The Company projects that this expansion will result in approximately 10 new jobs in Michigan’s Great Southwest.  Vail Rubber will continue to operate its facility located at 521 Langley Ave near downtown St. Joe as well as its southern facility located just north of Mobile, Alabama.

Hanley says, “The facility and capacity changes announced today are the largest and most significant in our family-owned and fifth generation-operated company’s 125-year history. This expansion reflects our confidence in our Vail team members and in the growing strength of the portion of the flat-rolled steel and aluminum industry served by the Company.”
