Three Berrien County communities managed to make a list of the “Safest Cities in Michigan” for 2016, but only one cracked the Top 15 this time out. The new report “20 Safest Cities in Michigan for 2016” was released today by SafeWise, a home security and safety brand committed to increasing safety education, awareness and preparedness in American communities.

Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township is the only community from Michigan’s Great Southwest to make the list checking in at 13th place with just 1.42 violent crimes per 1,000 population and 4.49 property crimes per 1,000 population. The rank actually has Berrien Springs dropping two slots from their 11th place rank a year ago.

The report, authored by Rebecca Edwards, says that the 20 cities that made the list this year are “shining examples of Michigan communities working alongside local law enforcement to keep people and property safe.” She also notes that “a vast majority — 80% — of Michigan’s safest cities appeared on our list last year, and three of them reported zero incidents of violent crime during the latest reporting period.”

SafeWise says there was only one reported murder among all 20 cities, and 40-percent reported zero murders or rapes, either.

To identify the safest cities in Michigan, SafeWise reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from the most recent year, along with population data. They eliminated all communities with fewer than 5,000 residents as well as any that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

From there, the company evaluated the remaining cities, narrowing it down based on the number of reported violent and property crimes in each. To further level the playing field, they calculated the likelihood of such crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each community.

While Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township ranked 13th in this year’s report, Lincoln Charter Township was rated 39th in the state and St. Joseph Charter Township rounds out the Top 100 at number 100.

Raisin Township near Adrian is declared the safest in Michigan, followed by Kinross Township in the Upper Peninsula at number two and Gaines Township south of Grand Rapids at number three.

SafeWise has been recognized for its Safest Cities Reports by the Huffington Post, AngiesList, Mashable, and Homes. com. You can see the full report and listings from SafeWise by clicking the link below:
