While it's still a bit on the chilly side so far this spring, a couple of harbingers of the eventual arrival of summer fun are about to burst onto the scene. The first among those is the return of the Whirlpool Compass Fountain below the bluff in St. Joseph.

The City of St. Joseph announced this afternoon that tourists and residents alike will enjoy the action of the colorful splash pad beginning next Monday, May 2nd when the early season schedule goes into effect with the fountain operating from noon until 2pm and again from 5pm til 9pm daily.

The city also has published a revised schedule, which will vary from the schedule that was provided in the 2016 City Calendar which was published last November. Anytime you want to be certain of the schedule for photo opportunities or to avoid disappointment for children and visitors coming from afar, the city recommends checking the city's official website at www.sjcity.com.

The city's public works team is also issuing a heads-up that the Fountain will be shut down for routine maintenance on June 1st, June 28th, August 3rd, September 7th, and during inclement weather events such as thunderstorm activity, heavy rainfall, extremely windy conditions and the like.

Other than that…here is the Whirlpool Compass Fountain schedule for 2016:

  • Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 27 = Noon to 2pm and 5-9pm daily
  • Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day = 10am to 10pm daily
  • Tuesday, September 6 through Sunday, September 25 = noon to 2pm and 5-9pm daily
  • Monday, September 26 through Monday, May 1, 2017 = closed for the season

The other harbinger of summer fun is the City of St. Joseph's Free Family Movies in the Park slated for nine consecutive Saturdays in July and August at Whirlpool Centennial Park alongside the Compass Fountain with each show beginning at dusk (or approximately 10pm — however, August does bring an earlier setting sun so dusk could arrive a bit earlier).

To enjoy the show, all you need is bring along your lawn chairs, blankets and snacks. Here's the city's line up for the summer season of Movies in the Park:

  • 7/2- An American Tail
  • 7/9- Arsenic and Old Lace
  • 7/16- Big Hero 6
  • 7/23- Aladdin
