WNDU Studios Evacuated Due to Bomb Threat by E-Mail

The broadcast news team at WNDU Television in South Bend found themselves on the opposite end of the story this afternoon, Thursday, December 13th, as their studios were evacuated by police and firefighters in the wake of an e-mailed bomb threat.

The entire staff was sent across the street to a parking lot near the Notre Dame Golf Course after being forced into the cold by arriving police units who reportedly found no credible threat during their search of the broadcast studios, offices and engineering spaces in the building.

At least one station reporter resorted to a Facebook live broadcast to update viewers and fans of the station on the situation. The WNDU newsroom was also reporting that their network affiliate at NBC in New York had reported “dozens of bomb threats sent to news outlets, government buildings, banks, libraries, schools and other businesses across the country.”

The Associated Press was also reporting on the threats, but also indicated that authorities were labeling the threats as a hoax, and “not credible.”

NBC News quoted the New York Police Department Counterterrorism Bureau as saying, “We are currently monitoring multiple bomb threats that have been sent electronically to various locations throughout the city. These threats are also being reported to other locations nationwide and are not considered credible at this time.”

Investigations are ongoing nationwide.
