Upton Congratulates Trump on Win

St. Joseph Congressman Fred Upton elected to stay out of the Presidential sweepstakes this year, declining to publicly voice support for the Republican Party standard-bearer and now President-Elect Donald Trump. He said early on that he would not throw his political support behind any candidate, choosing to focus instead on his own race for the 6th Congressional District of Michigan. That changed today when Upton issued a statement of congratulations to the new President-Elect.

Here is what the Upton campaign office released to the media this afternoon:

“The voters have clearly spoken and I want to congratulate Donald Trump on a hard fought victory here in Michigan and across the country. I’ve said all along I would be willing and able to work with whoever was elected our next president because lets face it: We’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s time to put the divisiveness of the past behind us, and come together as a nation. Building a better future for our children is something all Americans have in common and is a goal we all need to work towards.”

Upton voiced the same mantra last night in declaring his own victory at The Inn at Harbor Shores, calling for unity and an end to the politics of divisiveness.
