221 Main Restaurant doing pre-season update on ‘The Terrace’

You might have noticed a dumpster along Pleasant Street, east of Main the last few days…

One of downtown St. Joseph’s leading food & beverage spots is making some internal improvements, preparing for  Summer outdoor dining.

The Terrace at 221 Main Restaurant & Cocktail House is the upstairs seating area, offering the full 221 menu in the sun or under the stars.  The Terrace is highlighted with a centerpiece outdoor fireplace and large umbrellas.  That won’t change, but the  deck under your feet is being replaced by a more permanent and solid ‘composite surface system’.

Owner Robert Montgomery says the new surface will improve drainage, look better and require less maintenance and attention than the old traditional deck.  He described it as “feeling more like a patio surface than a deck.”

Montgomery said the surface will be absolutely flat and sturdy, with no variations, due to its ‘pedestal’ construction.  It consists of three-quarter-inch thick tiles about two feet square with five pedestals supporting each tile.  Laser levels are used to put the tiles in place.  He said there is just enough space between tiles to allow good drainage down to the roof surface underneath.

Montgomery remarked that it’s hard to believe that The Terrace has been in place for more than eight years, so it was time for some maintenance and tweaking ‘underfoot.’  He expects the project to be completed by mid to late April.

Meanwhile, 221’s specialty breakfast room, The Copper Pot, is expanding its menu to include several lunch items on its Friday-Saturday-Sunday breakfast-brunch menu.  Montgomery pointed to Chicken & Waffles, a Blackened Chicken Sandwich, The Monte Cristo and a couple of breakfast burgers.

The Copper Pot is open at 8am, Friday and Saturday until 1pm and Sunday until 2pm.

221 Main is open Thursday thru Sunday for dinner, beginning at 5pm.

Both restaurants expect to open at least one additional day for the Summer season.  Details to be announced.
