The constant reminder of the day and age of flash news arrived on the local doorstep today when Benton Harbor Area Schools officials elected to go into a perimeter lockdown based on a threat by one of its students against a school in another state. Here is what authorities told us just moments ago:
Earlier today, law enforcement officials notified Benton Harbor Area Schools that one of its students had made a threat of violence against a school located in Indiana. Even though law enforcement advised that no direct or implied threat had been made against any student or school within Benton Harbor, in an abundance of caution, the District moved to a heightened sense of security and placed three schools – Benton Harbor High School, Dream Academy, and ACA – in perimeter lockdown. The Benton Harbor Area Schools continues to work closely with both local and state law enforcement authorities regarding this matter.
“Given the national climate, the Benton Harbor Area Schools understand that incidents like the one today are challenging for our community. As always, the Benton Harbor Area Schools are committed, first and foremost, to the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” stated Assistant Superintendent Patricia Robinson.
At approximately 11:30AM, the BHAS was notified by local law enforcement that the student had been located in Fort Wayne, IN with his parents at which time the lockdown was rescinded.
