New Great Lakes Bay Region President for Horizon Bank

There’s a new leader at the helm of the Great Lakes Bay Region of Horizon Bank. Russell Mathews has been named to succeed David Dunn who is retiring.

Mathews, from Midland, is a Great Lakes Bay region native and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northwood University. He has 20 years of commercial lending experience in Michigan and brings with him a breadth of banking experience.

Outgoing President Dunn says, “It is truly my pleasure to welcome Russ to our outstanding and committed team here at Horizon Bank.” He adds, “His expertise and passion for this community is evident and I’m confident in transitioning my leadership role directly to Russ.”

Dunn joined Horizon Bank in October 2017 as a result of the merger of Wolverine Bank with Horizon. As the Chief Executive Officer of Wolverine for over 30 years, Dunn and his team were instrumental in integrating the two banks with the goal to ensure a legacy of success. Dunn notes, “Just like Horizon, Wolverine had a history of strength and commitment to community. The leadership teams and board of directors at each institution have a storied history of managing through good times and tough economic times such as the recent great recession. Through it all, I’m so proud to be a part of a combined organization that has been, and will continue to be, a beacon of strength for the customers and communities we serve.”

Like Dunn, Mathews is a well-known and active community contributor. Mathews’ current and past community involvement includes: Board Member at Midland Tomorrow, Marketing Chair for RMA Southeast, Chair on the CMA Corporate Contributions Board, Chamber Member of Midland Michigan, Team Captain for United Way/Black United Way Fund, and Junior Achievement Lead. As a corporate steward, he will help promote economic growth within the communities of the Great Lakes Bay region.

Mathews resides in Midland with his wife Marcy, and his two children, 5-year old Lincoln and 2-year old Callie.

Asked about his new role, Mathews says, “As a life-long resident of the area, I am thrilled with the opportunity to continue the legacy of community service and customer focus that is entrenched in this organization. The unwavering commitment of Horizon to recruit and support local banking professionals who truly know their communities is a wonderful opportunity.”

Dunn will be in a support role for Mathews as he transitions into retirement. David Quade is Horizon’s Regional Market President. He says, “Dave Dunn’s track record of successful leadership is evident through the exceptional growth of Wolverine Bank under his guidance. He worked tirelessly to ensure the bank would be focused and dedicated to the betterment of the customers, employees and shareholders of this community.” He adds, “We wish him the very best in this next chapter of his life.”

Horizon Bancorp is a locally owned, independent, commercial bank holding company serving Northern and Central Indiana and Southwest and Central Michigan, with multiple branches throughout Berrien County. Horizon also offers mortgage-banking services throughout the Midwest.
