Before you begin envisioning the legendary, albeit fictitious, turkey drop from the old WKRP Radio show on television, understand that what you are about to hear has, in fact, been successfully conducted multiple times before…just not in our immediate neighborhood. With that said, get ready to witness — or even take part in — the first ever Southwest Michigan Egg Drop — from a helicopter.
That’s an event on the Saturday of Easter weekend, April 11th from 11am until 1pm in St. Joseph Charter Township under the guidance of the Overflow Church in partnership with several local organizations, individuals and businesses who are mobilizing to bring the fun-filled venture to our region.
The first even Southwest Michigan Egg Drop is designated as a free event, designed to promote a fun, safe, and vibrant community experience bringing together kids and people from throughout the region. The response to event has already been extremely positive, and the momentum has been so swift that the event has been moved to a larger location. The drop will be held at St. Joseph Charter Township’s Maiden Lane Park at 1051 Maiden Lane in St. Joseph.
Organizer Brian Bennett, Lead Pastor at Overflow Church, says, “The goal of the Southwest Michigan Egg Drop is to gather people in our community around a positive annual event that will let them know they are loved and valued,” and adds, “We want to bring a really positive and fun experience into the heart of our region and reach out to the kids and families throughout Southwest Michigan. We want the community to know there are people who love them and love to have fun together.”
The Southwest Michigan Egg Drop, a community celebration for all, will include plenty of candy (for toddlers through grade 5), food, inflatables, music, 10,000 Easter eggs, and a helicopter drop. Save the date for this new event, proposed to take place annually, and join Overflow Church and others in the region in celebrating Easter in a new and exciting way in 2020.
Organizers tell us that the plastic Easter eggs that are dropped into the park from a helicopter overhead will join thousands already placed in the park ahead of time, and all will be empty. They will be redeemable for candy and prizes, and every participant gets the same gift regardless of how many eggs they gather up for redemption, as it is not a competition in any way.
Individuals and organizations are encouraged to become part of the positive impact in the region by promoting, attending, and sponsoring the Southwest Michigan Egg Drop through cash or candy donations. Area businesses are invited to participate this year and consider becoming Gold, Silver and Bronze Sponsors in the future for the annual event.
