A fiery crash on I-196 in Covert Township Friday evening is feared to have been fatal for the driver of a southbound car who, according to witnesses, crossed the median and slammed into a vehicle hauler carrying a load of new pick-up trucks.
Firefighters at the scene shortly before 6pm Friday night, March 26th, said that the car ended up being pinned under the cab of the truck in a roadside ditch, and both burst into flames near the 15-mile marker, three miles south of the M-140 exit of I-196.
The South Haven Area Emergency Services team and Michigan State Police were investigating the crash along with the Covert Township Fire Department, with State Police saying the incident appeared to be fatal to the car driver. Neither driver has been identified at this time, and traffic was re-routed for northbound traffic at the Covert exit by MDOT, assisted by the Covert and South Haven Police Departments for several hours.
The incident remains under investigation.
