Major Bridge Repair in St. Joseph Starting Monday

It’s becoming more true than ever in Michgan that we have just TWO seasons, “Winter and Construction.”  In recent years, road projects seem to be happening as much in the ‘shoulder seasons’ of Spring and Fall.    Starting Monday, there’s another example in downtown St. Joseph.

The bridge that carries Business Loop 94 (Main Street from Benton Harbor into St. Joseph) will be undergoing major re-construction and repair.  This is the South span of the road,  over the Morrison Channel and closest to the Berrien County Courthouse–NOT the ‘Bi-Centennial Bridge’,  the drawbridge over the St. Joseph River, which was repaired a couple of years ago.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will narrow the roadway to one lane with alternating traffic flow, starting Monday, October 17 and lasting for a couple of months, according to a statement from MDOT:

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will invest $1.4 million to repair the I-94 Business Loop (BL) (Main Street) bridge over Morrison Channel and Industrial Avenue in St. Joseph.

Work includes concrete deck patching, curb and fascia repairs, substructure and slope paving repairs, temporary supports, expansion joint repairs and gland replacement, pressure relief joints, and approach repairs. Work will pause for the winter with crews returning to complete the work March – June 2023.
