Six suspects are facing charges as part of a Michigan Attorney General investigation into a crash-related auto insurance scam. Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Thursday the ring is led by Michael Angelo of New Jersey. He allegedly started the scam in 2013 with a hotline that was supposed to connect those injured in crashes with treatment.
“The group used a lawyer referral line, 1-800-US-LAWYER, that Angelo owned to secure a steady flow of victims,” Nessel said. “He would distribute the list of daily callers to the attorneys, who in turn would refer accident victims to his medical facilities for treatment.”
Nessel said patients would receive medically unnecessary treatment that sometimes included surgery. Some became addicted to painkillers. The other five suspects are from Michigan. Nessel urged anyone who may have been a victim of the scam to file a complaint online.
