Veterans invited to learn about beekeeping in Paw Paw next month

Veterans, reservists, and their families are invited to a presentation on beekeeping planned in Paw Paw for July. MSU Extension’s Ana Heck tells us the Heroes to Hives program teaches the ins and outs of beekeeping to those who have served the country and their loved ones. Its next hands-on session will be July 18 at the Veterans Therapy Garden in Paw Paw.

“We’ll do an in-hive inspection,” Heck said. “So, we’ll walk people through how to get suited up, how to light a smoker, how to handle hives, inspect a colony, and then for those people who are beekeepers, we’ll talk about how we inspect a colony and look for signs of stress. We’ll also talk about other ways that everyone can support bees, even if you’re not a beekeeper.”

Heck says beekeeping is a fascinating hobby as it provides a chance to see how a bee colony works. Some people also do it for the honey. The Heroes to Hives presentation is free thanks to a grant from the USDA. You can register to attend right here.
