Three deputies with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department have received Lifesaving Awards for their efforts in the community in recent months.
At a Thursday meeting of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, Undersheriff Greg Sanders said Deputies Micah Carlson and Jonathan Cluster responded to a 911 call about a cardiac arrest on October 22 in Buchanan. They administered CPR and used an AED to save a life.
“Their teamwork and quick action saved this individual’s life,” Sanders said. “what makes this special in this case is that the individual that they were working on was a Buchanan fireman. So, I think we are very thankful for their quick actions to help out another public servant.”
Also receiving an award was Deputy Nathan Withington, who helped a woman who was choking at the Niles Courthouse on November 9. He performed the Heimlich maneuver on the juror and then gave her medication to help with an ensuing panic attack.
Sheriff Chuck Heit and staff presented the three deputies with the agency’s Lifesaving Award, thanking them for their actions.
