Congressman Bill Huizenga is seeking answers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on the status of Harbor Towers in Benton Harbor.
The high-rise has had several issues in the past couple of years, from flooding to electrical problems.
Huizenga tells us HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge appeared before the House Financial Services Committee Thursday.
“We have heard a number of stories and have read a number of stories about the poor living conditions there at Harbor Towers,” Huizenga said. “It’s not owned by HUD directly, but the housing authority in Benton Harbor is overseen by HUD, and our committee oversees HUD.”
Huizenga asked Fudge for an action plan.
“She committed that within the next 24 hours, she would get back to me and my office on what they’re doing, and specifically, I was asking for a plan of action looking at improving living conditions for the residents there.”
While she wasn’t familiar with the building, Huizenga said putting the issue on her radar couldn’t hurt.
Huizenga has requested a full briefing on the matter and what the plan of action between HUD and the Benton Harbor Housing Commission is to improve conditions, safety, and quality of life for the residents of Harbor Towers.
