After years of planning, permit seeking, and multiple delays, it appears a plan for construction is back on for a new gas station, convenience store, and truck stop just off I-94 at the M-139 interchange.
Sodus Township Supervisor David Chandler tells Moody on the Market that he’s been informed that developers are finally ready to break ground on a new Speedway service station at the site of the former Cosmo Extended Stay Inn.
The Cosmo motel was the site of a tragic fire in 2018 that killed six people — five children and their young mother. The building has since been razed.
Chandler says the township has approved a special use permit for the gas station and granted a slight variance for associated signage. He’s looking forward to the development now that the motel is no longer part of the equation.
“Really, my main concern was getting that building down and that was accomplished,” said Chandler.
New construction permits were mailed out this week. Speedway’s engineering team out of DeWitt, Michigan, expects to break ground in the Spring of 2025.
We’ve reached out to Speedway for a timeline for completion but have yet to hear back.
