The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra (SMSO) invites music lovers to experience the unexpected on Friday, May 17, as they present “Symphony: Unexpected” at the Mendel Center Jenkins Theatre on the campus of Lake Michigan College. The 7:30 p.m. performance will feature a special side-by-side collaboration with talented students from the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra (LMYO), bridging generations through musical excellence.

This innovative concert promises to deliver surprising musical moments that challenge audience expectations while showcasing the remarkable talents of both seasoned professionals and rising young stars. The program includes works that showcase contrasting musical styles and unexpected harmonies, creating a performance that inspires and delights.

“There’s something magical about seeing established musicians performing alongside our community’s young talents,” says Jessica Ishmael, President & CEO of SMSO. “This concert not only highlights our commitment to musical excellence but also our dedication to nurturing the next generation of performers.”

Music Director Matthew Aubin will conduct the combined orchestra, guiding professional and young student musicians through “Mothership,” a new contemporary music piece designed to surprise and captivate. The collaboration represents the culmination of months of dedicated preparation by LMYO students, who will perform alongside SMSO’s professional musicians.

The event also continues the SMSO’s silent auction fundraiser, which launched during the LMYO Spring Concert on April 27. Auction items celebrate local artistry and community spirit, with proceeds supporting SMSO’s educational initiatives and community programming. Bidding opportunities will be available both online and in-person at the May 17 concert, with final bids closing at the event’s conclusion.

“Our silent auction offers something for everyone,” Ishmael said. “From unique art pieces to exceptional experiences, each item represents the generosity and creativity of our community. It’s online, easy to use, and a lot of fun. Honestly, who doesn’t love the thrill of outbidding someone for a good cause?”

Tickets for “Symphony: Unexpected” are available now at www.smso.org or by calling the SMSO office at 269.982.4030. Prices range from $20-$40 for adults, with discounted rates for students and seniors. All tickets include access to an exclusive pre-concert conversation at 6:30pm with the Conductor & Music Director.
