The Benton Harbor Public Library has marked a major leadership development with the appointment of Reynaldo Frias-Santana as the new Executive Director of the library. Frias-Santana or “Brother Ray” as Board President Mamie Yarbrough said he prefers to be called, brings with him years of experience in public library leadership, a commitment to community engagement, and a vision rooted in inclusivity. He succeeds former director Kat Boyer, who resigned in August 2023 after years of dedicated service.

Marian Tripplett, who has served on the library board for nearly a decade, emphasized the inclusive and deliberate approach that led to Frias-Santana’s appointment.

“When the previous director resigned, I suggested to my fellow trustees that we try a different process. We slowed down, engaged in more strategy and planning, and included staff and community members. The process became a national search and involved community presentations by final candidates,” Tripplett explained. “We wanted candidates to see all of Benton Harbor. The library belongs to the community, and we wanted them to understand who they would be serving.”

Tripplett noted that the nearly two-year process led to two strong finalists, both deeply committed to public service and innovation. “What we needed was to pair our great staff with a visionary executive director. I believe this decision will help take the library to a new level.”

President Mamie Yarbrough also praised the process and Frias-Santana’s selection.

“We’ve been working on this for months, putting out applications across the country. We wanted someone who would stay and bring new ideas,” Yarbrough said. “Our first director stayed for over 30 years. Kat Boyer, who followed, brought creativity and dedication, like the Turkey Trot and Comic-Con events. We gave her room to lead, and it worked well.”

Speaking about Frias-Santana, Yarbrough said, “He’s amazing. He’s experienced, visionary, and deeply community-oriented. He told us his office would be out with the people, not just behind a desk. He brings new energy, and I truly believe he’ll help this library flourish.”

Originally from Puerto Rico, now working in Philadelphia, Frias-Santana is a master-level librarian who meets all Michigan state requirements. He also brings a unique background as a Capuchin monk.

Yarbrough concluded, “I thank God for how smoothly everything came together. We’ve had challenges, but this time, we did it right. This is a new beginning for our library, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
