From just a few boats docked in St. Joseph to a full-blown fleet along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Freedom Boat Club of Michiana is celebrating a major milestone: 10 years of “Boating Made Simple” in Michigan’s Great Southwest and beyond.
Launched in 2015 with a single location, three boats, and a dozen adventurous members, the club has grown into a regional presence that now includes nine harbor locations, over 60 boats, and more than 600 memberships, representing more than 1,000 active boaters in 2025.
Operating along 127 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the club’s steady growth has also steered into new waters — literally. Two new inland lake locations have opened in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Gun Lake, Michigan, expanding access to boating for members and marking the next wave of growth for the Michiana region.
Tom Armon, owner of Freedom Boat Club of Michiana, credits the club’s success to a simple formula: “More Members = More Boats + More Locations.” It’s the same member-driven model that’s powered the national Freedom Boat Club brand since its start in Sarasota, Florida, back in 1989.
“Our members love the convenience and flexibility,” Armon says. “It’s about removing the hassle so families, friends, and newcomers can just get out and enjoy the water.”
