Dowagiac’s signature summer running event — Steve’s Run — laces up for its 51st year on Friday, July 18 at 6 p.m., bringing runners and walkers of all ages back to the streets and trails of Cass County for a meaningful and memorable evening.

The race kicks off once again from downtown Dowagiac as part of the community’s Summer Festival and BBQ Competition, offering a spirited mix of road and trail routes that make this event both a challenge and a celebration.

Online registration is open now at runsignup.com/stevesrun.

A Race with Heart

More than just a timed event, Steve’s Run has grown into a community-wide tradition, dedicated to the memory of Steven Briegel, a standout local student-athlete and Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) alum who passed away from cancer in 1990 at just 22 years old. Since being renamed in his honor in 1992, the race has raised over $180,000 for cancer research and student scholarships.

Runners will take on a unique course that mixes paved streets with rugged off-road segments — a combination that once earned Steve’s Run national recognition as one of the “Top 10 Vacation Runs” in the country. Whether you’re sprinting to win, jogging with friends, or joining in memory of a loved one, this event offers something for everyone.

“We’re excited to be back downtown and looking forward to welcoming about 350 participants — along with the family, friends and spectators who make the event feel like a hometown reunion,” said Emily Schrock, Executive Director of the SMC Foundation Board. “It’s a day filled with remembrance, energy, and support for an important cause.”

Celebrating with Community

The run is part of a festive weekend atmosphere in Dowagiac, coinciding with the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Festival and BBQ Competition. Pre-race registration and check-in will be held at the historic Dowagiac train depot, just steps from the start line.

Notable elements returning this year include:

  • “Fire Up” tribute signs, celebrating those who’ve battled cancer
  • A cross country alumni walk in Steve’s memory
  • A mix of competitive runners and casual walkers, all contributing to the spirit of the day

The Cass Family Clinic returns as the event’s presenting sponsor, alongside key supporters like Cairn Stone Adventure Tours, the event’s bib sponsor.

“This is an inspirational event that brings the community together and contributes to the fight against cancer,” said Joseph Gavan, CEO of Cass Family Clinics.

A Local Legend’s Enduring Legacy

Steve’s Run was originally created by Ron Gunn, legendary SMC coach and founder of the Monday Night Running Club. Known throughout the Midwest and beyond, Gunn’s vision helped shape a running culture in Southwest Michigan that thrives to this day.

The course, which has historically included city streets, the Elks Golf Course, and wooded trails with natural obstacles like hay bales and logs, reflects that adventurous spirit.
