A cherished tradition of the Bobby Walker Basketball Tournament in South Haven is the kickoff ceremony honoring civic leaders, organizations, and sponsors with Leadership Awards. The annual presentation sets the tone for the summer weekend event, recognizing those who help strengthen the community.
This year’s ceremony included a heartfelt twist — a surprise tribute to tournament founder Bobby Walker. South Haven’s first responders from fire, EMS, and law enforcement joined together to honor Walker for his decades of service and community leadership.
“Your unwavering support of public safety, commitment to community outreach, and exemplary leadership have strengthened the bonds between citizens and first responders,” the proclamation read. “Through your efforts, you have inspired trust, fostered cooperation, and made South Haven a safer, stronger and more united place to live. We honor your generosity of time, talent, and spirit, and we thank you for the positive and lasting impact you have made in the lives of those we serve.”
The citation was presented by Brandon Hinz, executive director of South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES), and Adam DeBoer, interim chief of the South Haven Police Department.
The 49th annual tournament, held during the National Blueberry Festival weekend, once again brought players and fans together at Elkenburg Park.
