Work is underway on a new water tower in Benton Township.
The township last year was awarded a $20 million state grant for the construction of two new towers, one to be located off Zoschke Road, and the other off Euclid Road. Supervisor Cathy Yates tells us crews just constructed the base for the Euclid tower this week.
So, why did the township need new water towers?
“Growing demand in the township and the suburb areas because we supply water to more than Benton Charter,” Yates said. “We do Sodus and some other areas.”
The Euclid tower will be 1 million gallons, while the other tower will be 500,000. Yates said the new one under construction is actually smaller than the tower it’s replacing, but it’s all about better engineering.
“We felt that that tower was holding too much and we want to keep the water fresh and moving. So we’re going to make them a little bit smaller, but we still have more than enough to supply our needs here in the township.”
Yates says the $20 million from the state will cover the entire cost of the water tank project. The money comes from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.
