Andrews University Launches Industry Lab Summit to Connect Students and Leaders

Andrews Industry Lab

Andrews University hosted its first Industry Lab Summit recently at the Howard Performing Arts Center, giving students the chance to learn directly from and network with industry professionals in fields ranging from engineering and data science to healthcare and technology.

The event — themed “Innovation through Industry-Academia Collaboration” — brought together business leaders, faculty and students to explore how classroom learning connects with the rapidly evolving needs of today’s workplace. Speakers included experts from Andrews University, the University of Notre Dame and private industry, all highlighting the importance of hands-on experience and collaboration.

Andrews’ new Industry Lab program is designed to make student projects more practical and career-focused by pairing them with real-world problems and professional mentors. “We’re helping students gain the kind of experience that mirrors what they’ll encounter in industry,” said Gunnar Lovhoiden, chair of the School of Engineering.

Students who attended said the summit offered valuable insight into how their studies apply in real-world settings — and how to prepare for the careers they hope to enter. “I wanted to hear from people actually working in the fields I’m studying,” said senior data science major Jessica Ruvalcaba. “It gave me a better picture of where I want to go.”

The Industry Lab was launched in 2023 by Andrews’ Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship and School of Engineering, with support from federal and private grants. Future events will continue to connect students with employers through workshops, design challenges and mentorship opportunities.

“Our goal is to bridge education and enterprise,” said Jorge Cardenas, Industry Lab coordinator. “These connections give students a powerful head start — and help industry discover new talent and ideas.”
