Celebration held for new Corner at Wall Street development in Benton Harbor

A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the new Corner at Wall Street Apartments in Benton Harbor, a mixed-use housing and commercial development intended to offer supportive services for residents.

The $20.6 million project at 126 West Wall Street will feature 46 one-bedroom apartments, a sports court, gathering space, a community garden, and room for non-profits like Intercare and the Area Agency on Aging.

Wednesday’s groundbreaking included a guided tour of the construction site with MHT Housing President T. Van Fox, who told us this development will help people make a transition in life.

Independent living with the appropriate services to complement life skills, life needs, to get people up and rolling so we can complement their confidence, their education, their nutrition, their medical, get them back out in the workforce, get folks stable and they can stay for as long and we can also help transition to other housing when it’s called for,” Fox said.

Fox said people can stay at the Corner at Wall Street while they get back on their feet, or they could stay there indefinitely. The project was made possible when Cornerstone Alliance provided the property and MHT secured funding from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, among other sources.

Mayor Marcus Muhammad told us this is years in the making and has taken a wide range of partners.

It was kind of alphabet soup, but 50 units, low income, grocery store, sports and community center, all right here at this one spot, permanent housing for low income residents,” Muhammad said.I’m ecstatic.”

Fox said there are plans to locate a grocery store in the 50,000 square-foot development as well.

We’re talking to Spartan, we’re talking to Meijer, we’re talking to Walmart,” Fox said. “Where can we get equipment? How can we set up the appropriateness for food?”

MHT is offering to sell the necessary space to a grocer for $1.

The Corner at Wall Street is expected to be completed in October of 2026.
