There are four new opportunities this year, each one created to honor legacies or to help Lake Michigan College students succeed:
The Celebrating Miles Kelleher Cross Country and Track Scholarship honors the life of Miles Kelleher, who was witty, funny and always made the people in his life feel unique and special. He ran track and cross country for both St. Joseph High School and University of Detroit Mercy but he loved running with his father the most. Together, they shared an unforgettable run through Tianmen Square in Beijing, China.
The Janet W. DeRubbo Scholarship honors Janet DeRubbo’s lifelong dedication to education in Berrien County. Early in her career, she served as an educator at Upton Middle School and Lake Michigan College, where she inspired others through her passion for the arts.
The Tim King Music Scholarship honors the many talents of Tim King, a dedicated and skilled musician. Tim played soprano and tenor saxophones and stand-up bass with several area bands, and he taught students at the Citadel. He had a deep love for his students, his fellow musicians, and the teachers and mentors who shaped him. Tim generously volunteered his time and creativity with the local music community that nurtured him.
The 100 Women Strong Scholarship will provide up to two $1,000 non-renewable scholarships to students attending Lake Michigan College. 100 Women Strong is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women remain self-sufficient and supporting them as they overcome challenges that might otherwise force them to leave work or school. Preference will be given to women returning to school or navigating a significant life transition.
