The shelter at Berrien County Animal Services is once again nearly full, and animal lovers are invited to come by and consider adopting a dog or cat into their homes.
Shelter manager Ashley Herr tells us they have about 75 dogs right now, about 45 of whom are ready for adoption. The shelter is working to get all the dogs listed on their website and Facebook page.
“We have huskies, shepherds, bulldogs, pit bulls, and a couple of pit bull puppies,” Herr said. “We have a good variety right now, with both older and younger dogs. A little bit of everything.”
Herr says the adoption fee has been reduced to $25 from its usual $85 to attract more families. The license fee remains $12. Anyone interested in adopting can call Berrien County Animal Services and make an appointment.
“And then we’ll be able to have people come in and meet the dogs. We can take them outside for a meet and greet. If they have other pets at home, we can arrange a meet and greet between the dogs to make sure everyone gets along. And if they have younger kids, we always recommend bringing them in as well when selecting a family pet.”
Herr says they have plenty of cats, too.
“We’re seeing a lot more barn cats coming into the shelter. If anyone has a barn and needs mouse or pest control, we definitely have some working cats that would love a job.”
Due to staffing, the shelter has been limiting cat intakes, but it does have plenty to adopt out.
