Construction is now underway on the new Kohn Park in Chikaming Township.

The project is at 5844 Sawyer Road, the former site of an old fire station that was torn down a few years ago. Chikaming Township Supervisor David Bunte told us back in February he’s glad to see the property redeveloped into a public space.

“It’s been just an open space in Sawyer for a number of years. The fire station was demolished, and the property was donated back to the township by the Cohn family. Jerry Cohn and his wife, Bev.”

Chikaming Township began fundraising for the new park last April, and Bunte says the community came out in support in a big way, helping secure part of the $640,000 needed for this project. The rest comes from a state grant. He says Kohn Park will be a gathering place for people of all ages, right in the heart of Sawyer.

“We don’t have any parks in Sawyer or much green space, and this is such a huge addition to downtown Sawyer. Within the park itself is a gazebo for relaxing, sitting, and enjoying the outdoors. It can also be used for concerts, small acoustic performances, and events throughout the year.”

The new park will also have a children’s music area, plenty of green space, a dog station, and a bike station.

The township says over the past few weeks, crews have begun excavation and site work. The public should now see fencing in place along with early progress on key infrastructure.

The township says it’s exciting to see the site transition from plans on paper to real, visible progress.
