Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor will be getting some new safety enhancements soon.

Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety Deputy Director of Fire Services Brian Kazmierzak told the city Public Safety and Public Works Committee about them this week.

This weekend, you will notice there’ll be life rings going out on the beach, and there’ll be a designated swim area, which will keep boats out of the beach,” Kazmierzak said. “So that entire beachfront, the big open part, basically, the big open space, will be buoyed off so you can’t pull a boat up onto the beach like what was happening, causing issues with children.”

Kazmierzak said this gets Jean Klock Park more in line with other major beaches nearby.

There’ll be a swim flag system out there. They’ll be basically the same things that you would find at Silver Beach will now be at Jean Klock Park minus lifeguards.”

Kazmierzak said a grant from the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Rotary last year has made these enhancements possible.

The new features are going in just in time for Memorial Day.
