Something exciting is brewing at Andrews University, and it’s not just for students or academics. On Thursday, Sept. 26, the University will host its second annual Industry Lab Summit, a free, public event aimed at connecting students, faculty, and business leaders to explore real-world collaboration and innovation.
Held from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Howard Performing Arts Center on the Andrews campus, the summit is open to anyone interested in how local education and industry can work together on cutting-edge projects—especially in areas like technology, engineering, and healthcare.
This year’s theme, “Innovation through Industry-Academia Collaboration,” reflects the growing effort at Andrews to open its doors—and its talent pool—to the business community and beyond.
“This is about building bridges,” says Jorge Cardenas, coordinator of the University’s Industry Lab. “We want to create meaningful partnerships that benefit students, local employers, and the region as a whole.”
The summit will include networking opportunities, refreshments, and a series of presentations on innovation in action. Highlights include:
-
“AI Latest Trends” presented by Ackley Will, Chair of the Department of Computing at Andrews
-
“Product Development at the School of Engineering” led by Industry Lab Engineer-in-Residence Michael Mason and Engineering Chair Gunnar Lovhoiden
-
“Medical Device Collaboration Between HAPPE Spine and Notre Dame” presented by Notre Dame engineering professor Ryan Roeder
The Industry Lab, launched just last year, is a growing initiative housed within Andrews’ Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. It connects students and faculty with real-world challenges faced by companies and startups, offering creative problem-solving, research support, and technology expertise.
In 2024, the lab received a prestigious grant from the National Science Foundation to expand its outreach and deepen its partnerships with private industry—particularly in the fields of engineering, tech, and health sciences.
Organizers hope the summit will appeal not only to employers but also to curious community members eager to see what’s happening behind the scenes at Andrews, sometimes a bit mysterious just down the road in Berrien Springs.
“We’re proud to be a part of this region,” says Matias Soto, Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. “The summit is one more way we’re opening up to the community and inviting everyone to be part of the conversation about innovation and the future.”
Local businesses and organizations are also invited to become summit sponsors, with opportunities to connect directly with students and faculty, and to boost their visibility on campus.
