Another “Road Diet” Proposed for US 12 in Harbor Country

Another one of those proposed “road diets” is in the works for Michigan’s Great Southwest, looking to take part of US 12 in Harbor Country from four lanes down to three with just one travel route in each direction and a turn lane in the middle. If you’d like to put your two cents in on the project, put November 6th on your calendar and make plans to hit up the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Open House on the proposal.

MDOT will be holding an open house to share concepts for a proposed four-to-three-lane reduction, or “road diet,” to accompany a planned 2021 resurfacing project on US-12 from the state line between Michigan and Indiana to Red Arrow Highway in New Buffalo.

MDOT representatives will be on hand to discuss the issue with residents, business owners, and other interested stakeholders, from 4:30pm until 6:30pm on Wednesday, November 6th, 2019 at the New Buffalo High School cafeteria located at 1112 E. Clay Street in New Buffalo.

Accommodations can be made for persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking ability. Additionally, large print materials, auxiliary aids or the services of interpreters, signers, or readers are available upon request. If you wish to partake in any of those services you are asked to call 517-335-4381 to request any such service at least seven days before the meeting date.

MDOT is proposing the US-12 road diet from the Michigan/Indiana state line to Mayhew Street, and from Wilson Street to Red Arrow Highway. The section between Mayhew and Wilson streets will not be changed. The goal of the conversion is to improve safety for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized traffic.
