Apartment Complex Murder Investigation Underway in Dowagiac

A 43-year old Dowagiac man who lived at the Hillcrest Apartment complex in that city has been found dead in his apartment in a case that Dowagiac’s Director of Public Safety Steven Grinnewald says is a murder investigation.

Grinnewald says his department was called out yesterday afternoon, Thursday, January 7, 2021, at around 4:30pm, when they were called regarding a possible homicide that had occurred in an apartment at the Hillcrest complex “sometime within the last two days.”

After getting that information, officers obtained a search warrant for the apartment, wherein they found a 43 year old man “who was deceased from an apparent violent injury.”

Grinnewald says that no further details will be released at this time due to the on-going investigation, however points out that, “The Dowagiac Police Department does not believe that the public is in danger as a result of this incident,” and adds, “This incident is also not related to the shooting incident that the Dowagiac Police Department investigated on Tuesday morning of this week.” That incident revolved around a boyfriend-girlfriend quarrel that resulted in shots being fired into the hood of a car in the city.

The name of the victim of the Hillcrest Apartment murder is being withheld until family is notified.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Dowagiac Police Department at (269) 782-9743, or the Cass County Tip Line at 800-462-9328. Dowagiac Police were assisted at the scene by Detectives from the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team and Detectives from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
