Armed Gunman Holds Up Marathon Night Clerk in St. Joe

One of the most anxious times on the job for any retail clerk is when you are closing up shop for the day. It’s a time when thieves will lurk in the darkness waiting for your business to close planning to rob the night clerk of the day’s receipts.

Such was the case late last night when the cashier on duty at the Marathon Gas Station at 2805 Niles Avenue in the Southtown neighborhood was confronted by a masked robber demanding cash at gunpoint. St. Joseph Public Safety Detective Adam Herbert was called to the scene close to 10:30 last night, Tuesday, February 27th, when a gunman wearing a black ski mask and armed with a black pistol held the clerk up.

After the cashier turned over the cash, the gunman fled on foot, and authorities are now asking for your help in identifying that thief. The incident remains under investigation after St. Joe police were assisted by St. Joseph Township Police officers, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, and the Michigan State Police.

Anyone who has any information about the robbery is asked to contact Detective Herbert at the St Joseph Department of Public Safety by calling 269-985-0300. Tips can also be sent to Crime Stoppers at 1 800-342-STOP. The public can also private message the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety on their Facebook page. On that Facebook page you can see a short surveillance video of the gunman entering the station to being the robbery.
