BC Board Formally Hires New Corporate Counsel

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners  has approved the selection of Thaddeus Hackworth as its Corporate Counsel effective January 3, 2021.

A St. Joseph native, Hackworth received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Hope College and graduated from law school at Georgetown University. He began practicing law in New York City in 2004 before returning back home in 2020.

Hackworth started his law career as Assistant Corporation Counsel  in the General Litigation Division of the New York City Law Department, followed by a Senior Counsel position.  He also served as General Counsel for the New York City Districting Commission and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations.

Hackworth lives in St. Joseph with his wife Emily, who serves as the COO of a New York based non-profit.  They have two children, Clementine and Foster.

The Corporate Counsel position is one of two that are hired by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, the other being the County Administrator.  Corporate Counsel serves as legal counsel and provides advice to County officials, agencies, boards, authorities, commissions, and employees with respect to their official functions.  The Corporation Counsel’s annualized salary is $128,000 and is a three-year contract.
