Benton Harbor City Commissioners have approved a resolution expressing their appreciation to Whirlpool for all of its efforts to invest in the community. At Tuesday’s meeting, the commission hailed several of the company’s recent efforts in the city, including the Emma Jean Hull flats apartment complex and improvements to Riverview drive, the construction of the North American Headquarters, the Benton Harbor Tech Center renovations, the Whirlpool Community Charity Golf Event, and improvements to Union Park, among other things. Mayor Marcus Muhammad said he’s done some math, and the company’s investments in the city over the past ten years or so amount to around $150 million. The resolution states, “Whirlpool continues to call Benton Harbor and the surrounding area home and works to make it better. This commitment was never more evident than when Whirlpool made an Equality and Fairness Pledge following the death of George Floyd” that included a variety of initiatives. Muhammad says Whirlpool has done what they said they would do, and for that, it deserves thanks.
