The city of Benton Harbor could soon name a street in honor of artist Richard Hunt.
The Benton Harbor Legislative Committee this month advanced a resolution that would name Territorial Road from Fourth to Sixth Street “Richard Hunt Way.” The matter now goes to the full city commission.
Speaking at a committee meeting, City Manager Alex Little said the Krasl Art Center has requested the street renaming. Krasl would be responsible for paying for a sign to mark the honorary street.
Richard Hunt died in December at the age of 88. Throughout his career, he made several high-profile contributions to the Benton Harbor and St. Joseph communities, including the 50-foot sculpture, “And You, Seas” that stands along the south pier in St. Joseph.
Hunt also operated a studio in Benton Harbor that was taken over by Krasl when Hunt died.
